La Rosa which opened last week in Sydney is the newest creation of Nino Zoccali the passionate restauranteur and olive oil grower, who runs the long time favourite Pendolino. Both La Rosa and Pendolino are housed on opposite ends of the beautiful Victorian Strand Arcade on George Street. La Rosa specialises in artisan pizzas. You can always tell how good the pizzas are when you order a simple Margherita, as you can instantly tell the quality of tomato and cheese they use….. and of course how skilled the base is (their dough stands for 36 hours) …..and yes it was one of the best I have had outside Italy.
Its stunning red and black decor, complete with polished wood floors makes this more than just a regular pizza joint. It is alluring and clever with the way in which the illusion of space has been created in both dining and bar areas.
Pizzas are about $20 each and the menu also has a selection of great Calabrian inspired baked pastas – nothing over $28. Despite the lower prices, Pendolino’s quality and passion is written all over the food at La Rosa.
The service was confident and to be expected given its heritage.
